The word "shirt", apparently, comes from the word "rub", meaning a piece of fabric, and in turn comes from the verb "cut" (praslav. * Rǫbiti). Subsequently, this root served as the basis for the name of the garment. Children's clothing in ancient Russia often consisted of one shirt.
